Diggin in the states, part 3

Just returned from my third trip digging through various record stores and thrift stores in California. Came back with a helluva stack wicked 45s and LPs. Nothing beats the feeling of returning home with a shitload of gems just waiting to be cleaned and played for a live audience…

Speaking of which, we’re currently looking for a new venue for weLOVEweFUNK, as residents around Skatepark Area51 have filed noise complaints. Eindhoven authorities just pulled Area51′s license for staying open late and organising stuff. Which sucks not only for funk lovers in the area, but also rock, punk, hip hop, dubstep and techno crowds who flocked to the many parties held at Area51. I guess it’s the same old story over and over again… stay tuned for more news on www.welovewefunk.nl or join the Facebook page: www.facebook.com/welovewefunk.

For now, gaze at these pics I took on holiday. Just some good spots I could recommend to every vinyl junkie.

A few more gigs

tac_logoApril 12: I’m spinning at TAC Eindhoven, a creative community that’s very up and coming in Eindhoven. Will DJ at the opening of the REFRAME festival, where all facets of photography will be on display for 10 days, with my friends KID SUNDANCE, DEES and NICK LEBEAT of Kelderman/Van Noort fame. There will be some presentations from 19:00, party around ten-ish I guess.

April 19: the 24th edition of weLOVEweFUNK (we’re almost 4 years up and running with a party every 6 weeks, more or less). This time, no guest DJ’s as you’re used to by now, but just me and my partner in crime DJ DAMNRIJT. It’s gonna be floorfillers all around, no obscurities, just funky goodness from the hitcharts. Nice for a change. Free entrance as always.

April 20: a few friends of mine in hardcore punk bands SAID AND DONE and COLD REALITY throw a moshy get together in the village of Sintunnis, Brabant. They asked me to counter the fury with some soothing grooves. Will be a good one for sure. Free entrance.

Spinning with Pete Isaac (UK)

March 8, there’s yet another weLOVEweFUNK party at Skatepark Area 51 in Eindhoven. This time, we’ve found Pete Isaac willing & able to show what he means by Jelly Jazz. It’s an attitude rather than a style of music…be sure to read the upcoming interview on welovewefunk.nl with this institute on Funk, Soul, Jazz and Latin who has been around for more than 20 years in the UK Funk scene.

Too much monkey business…

Lot of things going on right now, so I’ll keep it short: tomorrow is the 21st edition of weLOVEweFUNK with Pushin Wood Soundsystem and Planet Monkey from Groningen. They kick some serious ass so I’ll meet you up at Skatepark Area51 in Eindhoven.

Just a few days until…DJ FORMAT

I’m beyond sikedness to be able to share the stage with DJ Format from Brighton, UK, a true turntable wizard that no others can match.

One of my greatest personal DJ heroes is doing two shows in Holland – this Friday, the beat goes on at our very own Area51 in Eindhoven. Together with our buddies in GRUB, this 20th edition of weLOVEweFUNK should be a slammer altogether. Other DJs on the bill: 2HYPE, NATIVE, RECI-P, GEORGES PUSHIN WOOD and DAMNRIJT.

On Saturday Nov 3, Format’s playing at BAMBEATS, a kick-ass party that my friends in Pushin Wood Soundsystem throw every 6 months. Also DJ Kwak from Brussels will throw some yummy 45s on the platters. See you there!

RSVP here: http://www.facebook.com/events/437146129656142/

In case you don’t know who Format is: check out this video for his latest album. The first 10 seconds should give you an idea what he’s all about.

Funk 45s vol.5 – Old vs New Funk!

The fifth installment of a series of mixtapes that’s improving in quality as my digging / collection of 45s grows. For this one I wanted to make a point. Music with a message…hmmm yes, sort of.

Sometimes I hear folks dissing new funk bands and releases, only because it’s not from the late sixties. First of all, that’s lame. Second of all: I’m-a prove you wrong, motherfucker!

As a real battle strategist I gathered some of my latest acquired troops and mercenaries on the 1 and 2, separating the old and the new 45s in two teams. These fierce teams battle song by song for the listeners’ respect. I dare to think that after an hour you will never diss new funk no more.

…and weLOVEweFUNK continues…

We start the 2012-2013 weLOVEweFUNK season with two special guests from our small nation’s capital: ILLCO and BART FADER from Amsterdam.

ILLCO is known of the famed record store Waxwell in Amsterdam, a regular go-to for international and aspiring DJs like myself. He also organizes the I LOVE VINYL nights, connecting the NY namesake to the old continent’s love for the black gold.

BART FADER, along with two fellas ALVIZ and TACO FETT get the Struttin’ nights going for almost a decade now, I’ve been told. Struttin’ is like weLOVEweFUNK would become, when Eindhoven keeps supporting deep funk & soul nights for many years to come.

These two vinyl junkies will be spinning their choice of funk, hiphop and any related tunes. Don’t miss out on this one, it’s going to be special. Friday 28 september 2012, Skatepark Area51, Klokgebouw 51, Eindhoven, 22:30 showtime, free entrance.
